I am comfortable with the terms hominin and hominid, and their differences. But whenever I try research for an overview of hominin evolution or hominid evolution, I end up with articles about hominin evolution.. Which makes me wonder, are these two phrases the somehow the same?

Maybe because they are in some ways related in the sense that man and ape both experienced similar natural pressures. Also, some sources mix the two terms because the author is probably not familiar with the difference.

If you can distinguish what they were talking about, then continue to use them, but in my opinion, if a 'professional' can't distinguish the two, we've got problems lol
