Compare and contrast regression and transgression. What sea level changes do these geologic
sequences imply? What could cause these changes? Give specific examples of regressive and
transgressive sequences. What will be an ideal response?

The student should recognize that regressions imply a period of falling sea level in which the
ocean recedes from the continent. By contrast, a transgression implies a period of rising sea
level in which oceans cover more of the continental masses. These changes can be caused by
climatic or tectonic factors. A good example is the lowering of sea level that accompanies an ice
age when more water is contained as ice in glaciers lowering sea level
