A patient telephones a nurse and reports that since the patient began ribavirin therapy 6 months ago, mild fatigue has been evident. For the last week, shortness of breath has developed and progressed. Which instruction should the nurse give?

  1. Come to the office for a complete blood count immediately. You may have developed hemolytic anemia.
  2. This is a normal response to this medication. It should resolve spontaneously in a few days.
  3. Fatigue and shortness of breath may indicate an allergic reaction to the drug. Take an antihistamine and report the effect.
  4. Discontinue this medication. Another medication will be required to treat your hepatitis.
