Trypanosoma cruzi, a South American trypanosome, is the cause of myocarditis in Chagas' disease. Leishmania tropica causes infection of the skin, lymphoid tissue, and liver known as kala-azar. Trichomonas vaginalis causes vaginitis. Giardia lamblia causes diarrhea. Toxoplasma gondii infects the lymph nodes and the central nervous system in immunosuppressed persons.
