The FDP is the primary finger flexor whenever full finger flexion (metacarpophalangeal MCP, proximal interphalangeal PIP, and distal interphalangeal DIP flexion simultaneously) is performed. The FDS is the primary finger flexor only when DIP flexion is not required and only minimal force is needed. The FDS will back up (serve as the secondary finger flexor to) the FDP whenever full finger flexion is done forcefully or rapidly.
