Behavioral indicatorsof fear include such overt signs as pacing in the waiting room, fidgeting, wringing hands, or gripping the arms of chairs until knuckles turn white. Patients may talk incessantly to avoid beginning treatment. Often, however, the signs of fear in the operatory are the opposite of the excessive movement seen in the waiting room. Patientsmay become quiet and slow to respond or nonresponsive, especially prior to beginning treatment.
