Miami Beach is actually a barrier island. Miami Beach has been heavily developed with hotels and condominiums. Speculate on why Miami Beach has had to have its beach sand replenished.

The presence of barrier islands (and their beaches) is predicated on the balance of sediment supply and erosion. In that urbanization was "paved over" part of the sediment load and sea level is rising, the depletion of sand outstrips the natural additions to the sand and the beach must lose mass.
