Our enzyme lab was designed to investigate the effects of enzyme concentration on reaction rate. For our lab, we covered filter paper disks in a catalase solution.  We constructed five different solutions that contained different concentrations of catalase, as one has 0% catalase, another 25%, another 50%, another 75%, and another 100%. We placed the disks in a vial of hydrogen peroxide, as catalase converts the H2O2 found in the hydrogen peroxide to 2H2O and 1 O2. The oxygen created by the reaction caused the disk to rise from the bottom, and we timed how long it took the disk to reach the surface of the vial from the bottom. We divided the depth of the vial by the amount of time it took for the disk to reach the top from the bottom to get our raw reaction rate. As shown by our graph, we can conclude that the higher the concentration of the enzyme, the higher the reaction rate. Our rates were .116 for 100 percent concentration, .097 for 75 percent concentration, and .047 for 50 percent concentration. It must be noted that our data for 25% concentration is missing, as we ran out of time before we could test it. Our data shows that the greater the concentration the enzyme, the faster the reaction rate. This test is certainly a valid way to test enzyme activity, because the higher reaction rate caused more bubbles to form, therefore allowing the disk to rise faster due to the higher amount of doubles. The absence of the enzyme resulted in the disk not rising in a reasonable timeframe, displaying the effects of enzymes as catalysts. If we tested the effect of concentration of the substrate on reaction rate, we would get similar results, as the higher the concentration of substrate allows more molecules to be acted upon, increasing the reaction rate.
