The very first step for a student to take after any laboratory accident is going to be to notify the instructor. The instructor will be able to determine the severity of the spill and will either tell the student that it is safe for them to clean it up themselves, or if the laboratory needs to be evacuated. As far as the broken glass, you should never handle broken glass with bare hands. Glass should be brushed into a dustpan and placed in a pre-designated container.
