Why are women at greater risk than men for development of HIV disease as a result of heterosexual intercourse with an infected partner?
A.   Women are infected with all sexually transmitted diseases more easily than men.
B.   The vagina has a greater amount of mucous membrane than does the penis.
C.   During childbearing years, women’s immune systems are less competent so that pregnancy can occur.
D.   Testosterone has a suppressive effect on viral replication and estrogen does not have this suppressive effect to the same degree.

The answer is B. The risk of transmitting HIV from men to women is much higher than from women to men. This is in part because of the much larger surface area of the vagina and cervix compared to the areas of the penis where transmission can happen.
