A move to specialty certification was pursued in 2000 but has not been successful due to lack of sufficient applicants and adequate financial resources. In addition:

  1. Parish nurses do not follow the American Nurses Association guidelines for prac-tice.
  2. Parish nurses use complementary and alternative therapies in their work that do not require certification.
  3. There is a question about the need for certification since parish nurses do not work in health care facilities.
  4. Clergymen and parishioners see no need for certification.

Parish nurses work in churches, synagogues, temples, mosques, and other faith community set-tings and not health care facilities; consequently, certification has little bearing on the decision of a committee or board in the community.
