What changes in sea surface temperatures and atmospheric pressures over the Pacific Ocean accompany El Niño? What physical changes accompany La Niña? How do El Niño and La Niña affect precipitation in North America, South America, and Australia?

During an El Niño, surface water in the eastern Pacific is warmer than average and barometric pressures lower. During a La Niña, surface water in the eastern Pacific is colder than average and barometric pressures higher. The effects of El Niño on global patterns of precipitation can be summarized (wet conditions in North America, generally dry conditions in Australia and South America). The effects of La Niña on precipitation in these regions are generally opposite those of El Niño.
