The suprapubic area of a postoperative patient is distended. The patient states that he has not voided since surgery about 9 hours ago. The nurse’s first action would be to:
1.   notify the physician.
2.   insert a catheter.
3.   have the patient sit on the side of the bed and try to void.
4.   prepare the patient to return to surgery.
