The instruction that should be given to the patient with portal hypertension to reduce the threat of hemorrhage is to:
1.   eat bland foods.
2.   avoid straining to have a bowel movement.
3.   increase fluid intake.
4.   use an electric razor to shave.

Straining can increase pressure and may cause the dilated vessels in the GI tract to bleed. Shaving with an electric razor does not prevent serious bleeding.
