A large percentage of the public believes that vaccines have a role in the development of autism. What information would you use to explain to a friend that there is no scientific evidence to suggest that vaccines cause autism?

Possible answers include: 1) The interpretation of a link between autism and the MMR vaccine initially came from a 1998 paper, and most of the authors of that paper have since retracted the interpretation of such a link. Further, in 2010, the editors of the journal that published the paper fully retracted it from the published record; 2) All data on the topic of vaccines and autism frequently have been reviewed by the Institute of Medicine, which concluded that there is no link between the MMR vaccine and autism, and no link between thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism. Therefore there is no reason to change childhood immunization schedules.
