Primary growth is in the roots and shoots, growing up, while secondary growth is growing wider (increasing the circumference). Primary growth occurs in all plants, while secondary growth occurs only in woody plants.

Primary growth occurs at the apical meristems (structure is elongated). Secondary growth occurs at the vascular cambium and cortex cambium (structure increases in width).
