Hi guys... I've been trying to solve this practice question for general chemistry but I just keep getting different numbers. I need help :'/

Tensile strength of a bar of material has units of mass/area, and it is a measure of the mass that a bar can hold before it is pulled apart. The tensile strength of asbestos is 3.5x10^4 kg/cm^2. Calculate the cross-sectional area (in cm^2) that a bar of steel must have in order to have the same tensile strength as a bar of asbestos that has a cross section of 25mm^2 .The tensile strength of steel is 5.0 x 10^4 lb/in^2.

guide me!!

Do you know the relationship between tensile strength and area?

All you did were conversions, is that all that needed to be done?

BTW, is this chemistry or physics?

Far as I know, yes it's just a confusingly worded conversion problem that required you to think outside the box.  They're may be other ways to do it, but I can't see any reason why this wouldn't work.  And yes that was 2.54 squared since it was cm squared from inches squared.

It is a chemistry problem...I was able to solve it before I checked the forum. Still, thanks y'all! Slight Smile
