Type 1 requires complete exogenous insulin dependence. The beta cells in the liver are damaged (usually believed to stem from auto-immune response), and they no longer produce insulin. Type 1 patients are usually thin.
Type 2 is increased insulin resistance at the cell's receptor sites, and decreased insulin production. Type 2 patients are usually overweight.
