Training schools typically are located in rural areas. The primary purpose of training schools is the reeducation and development of juvenile offenders. Juveniles learn vocational skills and can complete their high school equivalency examination (GED). Ranches, camps, and farms are also in rural settings and tend to offer fewer academic and vocational programs. Group homes generally are found in urban environments and house approximately 15 to 30 juveniles. These facilities are not secure, and residents usually attend school or have jobs. Halfway homes are similar to group homes. They generally are used for first-time offenders, those almost ready for release, and sometimes for juveniles with no other available living arrangements.
