Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease. The body attacks its own synovial membranes. It is a permanent condition, therefore eventually the cartilage will be destroyed and the only treatment can be the replacement of the damaged joint. In contrast, osteoarthritis involves degeneration of joint surfaces as a result of wear and tear; it is not an autoimmune disease.
