A new mother at 36 hours post-delivery has asked to be discharged to home. The nurse explains that criteria for discharge before the newborn is 48 hours old include:

  1. The newborn's respiratory rate is less than 60 breaths/min.
  2. Singleton birth at a minimum 37 weeks' gestation.
  3. The newborn has passed at least three spontaneous stools.
  4. The newborn has normal and stable vital signs for 24 hours before discharge.
