Concerning factors in how the fetus moves through the birth canal, nurses should be aware that:
 
  1. the fetal attitude describes the angle at which the fetus exits the uterus.
  2. of the two primary fetal lies, the horizontal is where the long axis of the fetus is parallel with the long axis of the mother.
  3. the normal attitude of the fetus is termed general flexion.
  4. the transverse lie is preferred for vaginal birth.
