Concerning the estimating and interpreting of recurrence of risks for genetic disorders, nurses should be aware that:

  1. in a dominant disorder the likelihood of the second offspring also having the con-dition is 100.
  2. an autosomal recessive disease carries a 1 in 8 risk of the second offspring also having the disorder.
  3. those disorders involving maternal ingestion of drugs carry a 1 in 4 chance of be-ing repeated in the second child.
  4. the risk factor remains the same no matter how many affected children are already in the family.
