Concerning the nutrient needs of breastfed and formula-fed infants, nurses should be aware that:

  1. breastfed infants need extra water in hot climates.
  2. during the first 3 months breastfed infants consume more energy than formu-la-fed infants.
  3. breastfeeding infants should receive oral vitamin D drops daily during at least the first 2 months.
  4. vitamin K injections at birth are not needed for infants fed on specially enriched formula.

1. Incorrect. Neither breastfed nor formula-fed infants need to be fed water, not even in very hot climates.
2. Incorrect. During the first 3 months formula-fed infants consume more energy than breastfed infants and therefore tend to grow more rapidly.
3. Correct. Human milk contains only small amounts of vitamin D.
4. Incorrect. Vitamin K shots are required of all infants because the bacteria that produce it are absent from the baby's stomach at birth.
