Concerning rubella and Rh issues, nurses should be aware that:

  1. breastfeeding mothers cannot be vaccinated with the live attenuated rubella virus.
  2. women should be warned that the rubella vaccination is teratogenic and they must avoid pregnancy 2 to 3 months after vaccination.
  3. Rh immune globulin is safely administered IV because it cannot harm a nursing infant.
  4. Rh immune globulin boosts the immune system and so enhances the effectiveness of vaccinations.
