A woman pregnant with her first child tells the nurse that her husband slapped her across the face several times because his dinner was not ready. She stated that previous to this episode, he had never hit her. The nurse should tell the client,
 
  a. This is probably just an isolated incident.
  b. Abuse often begins during a woman's first pregnancy.
  c. What did you do to provoke him?
  d. Give me your husband's work number so I can talk to him.

Due to the increased stress that accompanies pregnancy, abuse often begins during a woman's first pregnancy. Abuse is seldom an isolated incident. Asking the woman, What did you do to provoke him? is not a question fostering client advocacy; it implies the woman caused the abuse. Attempting to handle this situation by asking for the husband's work number is inappropriate.
