In the situation where the nurse is unfamiliar with the patient's culture, the nurse should pattern verbal and nonverbal communication after the patient's own style. There is no indication that this patient does not speak English, so using an interpreter, talking slowly using simple language, and using mostly nonverbal communication is inappropriate.
