An estuary is a semi-enclosed body of water where freshwater from a river meets saltwater from the sea. Tidal flats are sediment deposits that accumulate in river mouths and are exposed during low tide. A salt-wedge estuary is one in which river flow into the estuary is strong enough to force back the upper reaches of the lower layer of seawater coming into the estuary. The result of such action is to create a narrow wedge of seawater moving up the estuary.
