Senescence is not an adaptation in its own right, yet under certain circumstances senescence can be actively selected for. How can you reconcile these seemingly opposing statements?
 
  a. Selection is less effective at removing late-acting mutations.
  b. Longevity is heritable in natural populations.
  c. Mortality rate is not constant throughout an organism's life.
  d. There are trade-offs between optimizing lifetime fitness and longevity.
