The net flow of ions across an open ionic channel is determined by two factors: the membrane potential and the differences in ion concentrations between the intracellular and the extracellular spaces. The direction of ion movement produced by the ‘concentration force’ depends on the concentration differences for the ion between the intracellular and the extracellular compartments.

An increase in a membrane’s ionic permeability usually causes a shift in membrane potential. However, there are two situations that are exceptions to this rule. The first is when the membrane is permeable to more than one ion and the second is when the membrane potential is already at the equilibrium potential for the ion.
