Heuristic problem solving is based on the experience of trial and error testing. While it may be
practical, it can be costly in terms of time, money and errors. It also does not necessarily lead to the
best solution. Theoretical problem solving involves decisions based on models tested through
research. Because of the nature of social science theory, there are fewer axioms (certainties) than
found in the physical sciences.
