Some things to consider before choosing a route of drug administration include the following:

Accessibility to that particular route of administration (e.g., is a vein assessable and able to be kept as clean as possible?).

Whether or not a drug is given in the clinic or by the owner. The clinic personnel can give drugs in a variety of ways that most owners cannot.

Severity of the disease condition. Severe disease may require access to more rapidly absorbed routes of administration.

Health of the animal. A vomiting animal cannot be given oral medications.

The form of the desired drug. Some drugs are only available in certain forms.
