The text points out that the swim bladders of deep-sea fishes that migrate over large vertical distances are nearly filled with lipids, leaving space for only a small volume of gas, whereas deep-sea fishes that do not make large vertical migrations

have more gas and less lipid in their swim bladders. What is the functional significance of this difference?

Lipids do not expand and contract when the external pressure changes, so a swim bladder with a lot of lipid and a little gas has only a small change in volume as the fishes move up and down. That is good for fishes that migrate over large vertical distances.
