Why may women's shelters actually save the lives of more men than women?
 
  a. When women have realistic options for escaping a violent relationship, they are less likely to kill their abusive spouses.
  b. If a man is charged and convicted of abusing his spouse, he is very likely to be murdered by another inmate while serving time in prison.
  c. Although these shelters specifically house women, they also provide family support programs such as drug and alcohol counseling, which often help abusive husbands quit their addictions.
  d. Woman's shelters normally have volunteer physicians screen the residents for sexually transmitted infections (STIs); if a woman is found to be positive, her husband is notified and is usually assisted with finding treatments for such sexually transmitted infections such as HIV.
