Sidney was infected with the herpes virus six months ago, at which time she had fluid filled blisters on her vagina that eventually scabbed over and healed. She recently has a new surge of blisters, this time on her anus.

What has likely occurred to cause this new outbreak of blisters?

  a. The virus was completely gone from her body, but Sidney became reinfected when she had anal sex with someone who had an active outbreak of herpes.
  b. The herpes virus that Sidney initially contracted was dormant, but recently had a resurgence, migrating through her blood stream and causing an outbreak in a new region.
  c. The initial herpes virus moved along Sidney's nerves from the spinal cord out to a different region of the skin's surface.
  d. Sidney did not finish the prescribed amount of penicillin, causing the virus to first diminish and then to spread.
