Non toxic RIPs do not cross intact cell membranes very well, therefore they cannot access the ribosomes to inactivate them. Toxic RIPs can cross cell membranes though. They have a domain that binds tightly to glycolipids attached to proteins on cell plasma membranes. This binding causes the cell to take up the RIP by endocytosis.
