Ans: The pol gene codes for a protease that cleaves the polyproteins coded by the retroviral genes into individual proteins, a reverse transcriptase that can generate a DNA copy of the viral RNA, and an integrase that facilitates the insertion of viral DNA into the host genome. The translation of pol requires the ribosome to bypass an in-frame termination codon after translating the gag gene.
