Hox genes are animal genes that share a homeobox and a common ancestor and that regulate developmental processes. MADS are plant genes whose binding domain is a MADS box. Hox and MADS genes have similar functions in that they both encode transcription factors, but they are not homologous genes. In addition, unlike Hox genes, MADS-box genes are not clustered in the genome.
