Graded potentials are changes in membrane potential that differ in size, instead of being all-or-none. They are the summation of the individual actions of ligand-gated ion channels. They are incremental and may be either excitatory or inhibitory. The magnitude of a graded potential is determined by the strength of the stimulus.
