The Auburn prison system was developed in New York during the nineteenth century; it stressed congregate working conditions. The Pennsylvania penal system model was based on solitude, repentance, and individual work. While both models practiced solitude, the congregate system of Auburn eventually won out due to space constraints, cost, the use of prison labor, and the sanity of prison inmates.
