Under common law, the crime of burglary was defined as the breaking and entering of a dwelling house of another in the nighttime with the intent to commit a felony within.. Burglary is a serious crime because it involves entering another's home, which threatens occupants. More recent U.S. state laws have changed the requirements of burglary, and most have discarded the necessity of forced entry.
