According to the FBI, about 7,000 hate crime incidents involving 8,000 victims occur each year. About half are motivated by racial bigotry and 20 by religious intolerance; the rest were the result of a bias against a sexual orientation, an ethnicity or a national origin, or a disability. While intimidation was the most common form of hate crime, about 20 involve assault with a weapon, and a few lead to death. Levin's three motivations for hate crimes include thrill-seeking hate crimes, reactive hate crimes, and mission hate crimes.
