Most agencies require at a minimum that a police officer be a U.S. citizen, not have been convicted of a felony, have or be eligible for a valid driver's license in the state where the police department is located, be at least 21, and meet weight and eyesight requirements.
Extensive background checks are also done, which include drug tests,
o educational and military review, driving record checks, credit checks, and interviews with spouses, friends, and previous employers.
When individuals are first hired they are in a probationary period where they can
o be fired without cause. This probationary period includes when they are going through the police academy and when they are in field training.
In the police academy, recruits are taught about laws, use of weapons,
o interviewing witnesses, self-defense, and other essentials of police work.
Field training is when the recruit is placed under the supervision of a senior
o officer where he or she will be introduced to the informal rules of policing.
