Bacteria often organize genes in operons, particularly those involved in multi-enzyme pathways.

1) Do inducible operons usually regulate anabolic or catabolic pathways? In an inducible operon, when the repressor is bound to the inducer, is the operon on or off?

2) Do repressible operons usually regulate anabolic or catabolic pathways? In a repressible operon, when the repressor is bound to the co-repressor, is the operon on or off?

3) Explain the advantage to the cell to have catabolic pathways regulated by inducible operons.

Regulated catabolic pathways are usually inducible because the pathway is stimulated rather than inhibited by a specific molecule. An example of an inducible system is lactose metabolism.

The Trp pathway is anabolic as Trp is being synthesized. The Trp and other regulated anabolic pathways are usually repressible because the system can be repressed by an overabundance of the end product. The end product, Trp, in this case, decreases or stops the transcription of the enzymes necessary for its production.
