While Las Vegas reestablished its status as epicenter of the gaming industry, legalized gaming expanded across the country and the globe. The legalization of casino riverboats on the Mississippi River and Ohio River, land based casinos in the middle section of the country, and casinos on Native American reservations in the late 1980's and 1990's spread gaming across the country. In the 1970's, 10 of the population was within a four hour drive of a casino. Today, 90 of Americans are within a four hour drive. That is a phenomenal reversal given the short time frame.

The expansion of gaming presented an opportunity for casino companies to grow. They started expanding in the 1970's when the Atlantic City market opened. As each new jurisdiction legalized gaming, the casino operators found more opportunity. Today there is a Harrah's in 11 states. The Sands Macau cracked the international market for American gaming companies in 2004.

The 1989 opening of Steve Wynn's Mirage revitalized the Las Vegas market. Wynn took the concept of creating a theme to a dramatic extreme. Based on a tropical theme, he incorporated plants throughout the casino. Carpeting and other soft goods reflected the tropics through patterns and designs. Plantation shutters, bamboo furniture, and other totems of tropical life were incorporated into the furnishings. Most spectacularly, he built an erupting volcano between the casino and The Strip. The volcano was realistically designed. It was generally conical in shape and appeared to be a South Seas island complete with vegetation on its sides. It was surrounded by water to complete the island look.

The volcanic effects were achieved by releasing natural gas underwater. As it rose swiftly to the surface, it erupted from the water and exploded into flame. Pyrotechnics and flames shot from the summit of the volcano. The roar and explosion of gas were heard up and down The Strip. Erupting periodically during the evening hours, it drew large crowds. A trip to Las Vegas was not complete without seeing the erupting volcano. The volcano was a gimmick to create awareness in the public's mind. It was also a draw to bring people into the casino. Once they watched the volcano erupt, people would visit the casino.
