The sources that students may list are: interpersonal relationships, work conditions, personal issues, and time conflicts.

The three types of networks are the advice network (experts in the field), the trust network (sources of insider information), and the communication network (sources of work related issues). Examples of use will vary for students.

A mentor is a counselor who is usually in a management position that may provides advice on skills needed for your target position. A coach is a tutor who observes your work and gives feedback on your performance. A sponsor is a senior manager in an organization who gives you exposure to others who will help your career. Examples will vary for students.

The components of a career development plan are: a career goal or target position, gap analysis between current education and education required for the position, gap analysis between current skills and experiences and skills and experiences required for the position, and a series of steps and target completion dates for obtaining skills and experiences needed for the position.

The technical/functional career anchor involves recognition for expertise. The managerial career anchor involves problem solving and dealing with others. The autonomy career anchor is characteristic of people who prefer to work alone. The security career anchor involves stability and avoiding risk taking.
