Saltatory conduction gets the impulse to the muscle quickly. Without saltatory conduction, there would be a longer time lag between the thought of moving a muscle and the actual action occurring. This would upset the coordination of muscle and give slow reaction time and more potential for body damage when fast reactions are needed. Consider the effect of slower reaction time by the driver of a car.
