During the activated sludge process, continuous aeration and mixing provide sufficient oxygen levels for certain aerobic bacteria (e.g., Zooglea ramigera) to produce slime. The slime-forming bacteria form large aggregates (also called flocs) containing all types of microbes in the activated sludge, such as bacteria, fungi, and protists that can actively transform organic compounds in the wastewater.
