  b. 1 and 3 d. 2 and 4

Q. 2  Hydrogen ion activity can be expressed as which of the following?

  a. pH = log10H c. pH = log10H+
  b. H+ = log  10 d. pH = 1  107 mol/L

Q. 3  Acid-base neutrality is expressed as which of the following? 1. pH = 14 2. pH < 7.0 3. pH = 7.0 4. H+ > OH 5. H+ = OH

  a. 1 c. 2 and 4
  b. 3 and 5 d. 1 and 4

Q. 4  Which of the following are true concerning pH? 1. A blood pH = 7.50 is alkaline. 2. A blood pH <7.40 is alkaline. 3. A blood pH >7.40 is acidotic. 4. A blood pH = 7.30 is acidotic.

(Answer to Q. 1)  ANS: D
A PCO2 electrode is basically a pH electrode covered with a carbon dioxidepermeable Teflon or silicone (Silastic) membrane. A bicarbonate-buffered solution is held between the Teflon mem-brane and the pH glass electrode by a nylon spacer. CO2 from the blood diffuses across the sem-ipermeable Teflon membrane and reacts with the water to form carbonic acid, which dissociates into hydrogen ions and bicarbonate.

(Answer to Q. 2)  ANS: C
Sorenson introduced the term pH as a shorthand way to express the hydrogen ion activity of so-lutions. It is defined as the negative logarithm (base 10) of the hydrogen ion concentration, or pH = log10H+.

(Answer to Q. 3)  ANS: B
In general chemistry textbooks, a pH of 7 represents universal neutrality, where the concentration of hydrogen ions (1  107 mol/L) and hydroxyl ions (1  107 mol/L) is equal. This is the pH of pure water.

(Answer to Q. 4)  ANS: D
A blood pH that is greater than 7.40 is alkalotic. Therefore, a pH of 7.50 is alkalotic. A blood pH that is less than 7.40 is acidotic. Therefore, a pH of 7.30 is acidotic.
