When starting an oil painting, you will need to begin your first layer of paint using turpentine
mixed with oil paint. It is wise to lightly paint the outline of the objects in your composition. It is easy
to paint over any areas you want to cover up and redo at this stage. Once you have the general outline of
all of the objects you are painting, you will then analyze both the color and tone of each of the objects
and mix the appropriate shades of color. It is not until the very final layer of your painting in which you
will mix linseed oil to the paint rather than turpentine. Painting in oils is very involved, but the final
product is worth it. The layers of paint give it a true depth and luster.
